BSMRSTU authorities announce to close campus till Oct 3

Shawdesh Desk: Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University authorities on Saturday decided to shut down the campus till October 3, in the face of the ongoing student protests against its vice-chancellor Khondoker Md Nasiruddin, for his alleged involvement in irregularities and corruption.

The university registrar, Nuruddin Ahmed issued a notice in this regard at about 9:00am and directed the students to vacate dormitories within 10:00am.

The agitating students announced to continue their protests until their demand would be met and they decided to stay at the dormitories defying the authorities’ notice.

Following the students’ decision the university authorities cut off the power and water supply of the dormitories. Besides, they also stopped the transport services so that student, living outside the campus, could participate in the demonstrations on the campus.

At about 11:00am, miscreants launched attacks on the demonstrating student in Balur Math, Sobhan Sarak, Gobra Madrassah and Nilamath areas near the campus, leaving at least 50 students, including three journalists, injured. The injured journalists are — Shafiul Kayes, campus correspondent of Bangladesh Today, Jahidul Islam, campus correspondent of Pratidin Sangbad and Tawhid Islam, campus correspondent of Career Times.

The injured could not be taken to hospitals as the transport services were halted.

The university assistant proctor, Humayun Kabir, resigned from his post following the ongoing incidents, while a quarter of teachers extended their support to the demonstrators.

The students’ demonstration against Nasiruddin began on Wednesday night after four student leaders talked live on social media about the existing problems and corruption prevailing at the university.
